Sept 2018: Alicia Kays


What is your favorite thing or things to do when you're not at CFS? 
When I am not at CFS, I love to spend time with my family. You can either find us hiking, hanging out at my parents’ farm or we are up to some crazy adventure. Another favorite thing of mine is mountain biking
and spinning. I am also extremely passionate about the arts. Lastly, growing my herbs and vegetable garden bring me great joy especially when I am able to reap the goods and use them when cooking.

What made you want to start CrossFit? 
Prior to CrossFit, I had started a healthier me through exercise and nutrition. However, I had hit a plateau. A friend had mentioned CrossFit Skunk and we decided to give it a try. After four weeks, I was hooked!

What motivates you through a tough WOD?
The coaches and members motivate me through a tough WOD. Everyone is at different levels of fitness, so it’s easy to want to push yourself further to strive to be at their fitness level. When you see someone has already finished their WOD, it makes me want to push further to be able to achieve that goal too.

What is your favorite motivational quote? 
I know this quote is so cliché, but it’s simple and its’ meaning says it all…”NO PAIN, NO GAIN”! I actually say this to myself when my mind starts to wander, or an effort gets tough and I begin to lose focus from pure exhaustion. It helps me center myself and renews my thoughts. It’s a reminder that without the effort, no progress can be made.

What is some advice you'd give to someone new to CrossFit Skunk or just started CrossFit?
There is a learning curve to CrossFit. I would encourage them to really listen to the coaches, watch when they model, ask questions and rely upon the members as support. It’s the best community you can gain for a better self! 

What is something you've done at CFS that you never thought you'd do? 
I never thought that I would be weightlifting using various moves such as the Snatch, a Front Squat, Back Squat and Thrusters to name a few.

What are your CrossFit goals? 
My goals are to continue to learn and utilize proper form and; techniques and gain strength. I also want to continue to build upon mental and physical health with using proper nutrition as my driving force for continued success.

What is your most favorite or least favorite movement? 
I love it all even if it kicks my butt!!!

What is your biggest accomplishment since starting CrossFit? 
I have lost 13.1 pounds and 10.5 inches in 8 weeks, but with that loss I have gained health and fitness.

What have you learned since joining CrossFit Skunk?

I have learned that the right community of people, coaches and members, support each other to be their best self. It’s super empowering!
